Annunciate le candidature ai Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (MUAHS), i premi con cui il sindacato dei truccatori e degli hair stylist cinematografici e televisivi sceglie ogni anno le migliori prestazioni professionali della stagione. I loro verdetti sono molto attesi in chiave Awards Season perchè i loro vincitori coincidono spesso con le scelte dei membri votanti per gli Oscar, consentendo di prevedere il favorito nella categoria Miglior trucco e parrucco.
Le categorie sono ben 5: Best film Contemporary Make-Up, Best Film Period/Character Make-Up, Best Film Special Make-Up Effects, Best Film Contemporary Hair Styling, Best Film Period/Character Hair Styling. Diversificando i riconoscimenti con una suddivisione tra film ambientati ai giorni nostri e pellicole in costume permette si ricavano i due potenziali frontrunner per i successivi Oscar nella categoria unica del Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
A sostegno di questa tesi basti pensare che su 7 edizioni, ben 6 volte il vincitore delle categorie Period/Character ha vinto successivamente l’Oscar: Dallas Buyer-Club (make-up), Grand Budapest Hotel (make-up-hair styling), Mad Max Fury Road (make-up), Suicide Squad (make-up), Darkest Hour (make-up), Vice (make-up), e ben 4 volte lo ha vinto la pellicola che ha conquistato il premio nella categoria Best Film Special Make-Up Effects: Il Grinch, Mad Max Fury Road, Darkest Hour, Vice. Senza dimenticare che lo scorso anno Bombshell “ha fatto la storia”, diventando il primo film vincitore delle categorie Contemporary (make-up/special make-up effects/hairstyling) ad essere confermato agli Oscar.
Quest’anno 3 film hanno ottenuto il maggior numero di nominations ma solo uno di essi può trasformare la sua candidatura in una chance per gli Oscar dato che Bill & Ted Face the music (4 noms) e Mulan (3 noms) non sono stati selezionati nella Shortlist dei semifinalisti per gli Oscar, dove invece troviamo Hillbilly Elegy che con 3 candidature (Best Period and/or Character Make-Up, Best Special Make-Up Effects, Best Period Hair Styling and/or Character Hair Styling) conquista una potenziale leadership in questa categoria, anche se attualmente non ha vinto alcun premio tra quelli assegnati dalle associazioni dei critici americani.
Su questa lunghezza d’onda seppure con 2 nominations a testa si fanno notare 3 film che finora hanno ottenuto attenzione da parte dei Film Critics Association Awards (anche se la categoria del Miglior Trucco e Parrucco è presente in un numero assai esiguo di premi): Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Chicago Indie Critics Award), Mank (Hawaii Film Critics Society Award), e più distanziato Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (London Critics’ Circle Film Award).
Tra i nominati del Best Special Make-Up Effects si fa notare il lavoro di Mark Coulier per il film italiano Pinocchio di Matteo Garrone, la cui presenza nella Shortlist degli Academy mantiene alta la possibilità di una candidatura agli Oscar.
