Assegnati i premi della Visual Effects Society (VES), la rinomata organizzazione dell’industria dell’intrattenimento che rappresenta l’intera gamma dei professionisti degli effetti visivi, che ogni anno elegge i migliori lavori professionali in virtù del valido contributo offerto al settore. I verdetti di questo riconoscimenti hanno una forte influenza sulle scelte degli Academy Awards, dato che molto spesso il film che conquista il maggior numero di VES Awards conquista anche il premio Oscar per la categoria migliori effetti speciali
In tal senso per quanto riguarda il settore cinematografico abbiamo ben 10 categorie: Best Performance by an Actor in an Effects Film, Best Models and Miniatures in a Motion Picture, Best Special Effects in a Motion Picture, Best Supporting Visual Effects in a Motion Picture, Best Matte Painting in a Motion Picture, Best Compositing in a Motion Picture, Best Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Motion Picture, Best Effects Art Direction in a Motion Picture, Best Character Animation in an Animated Motion Picture, Best Visual Effects Photography in a Motion Picture.
Basti pensare che su 16 edizioni, il film che ha vinto più Ves Award è stato confermato agli Oscar ben 10 volte nella suddetta categoria: Il Signore degli Anelli – Le due torri (8 premi), Il Signore degli anelli – Il ritorno del Re (4 premi), Spiderman 2 (3 premi), Pirati dei Caraibi – La maledizione del forziere fantasma (5 premi), Il curioso caso di Benjamin Button (4 premi), Avatar (6 premi), Inception (4 premi), Vita di Pi (4 premi), Gravity (7 premi), Il libro della giungla (4 premi).
Quest’anno il film che ha vinto il maggior numero di VES Awards è stato Avengers: Infinity War che si è aggiudicato ben 4 premi (Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature). Vittoria scontata considerando l’assenza dell’altro frontrunner Black Panther che ha comunque conquistato numerosi premi assegnati dalle associazioni dei critici americani tra cui il Critics’ Choice Award e il Satellite Award. Con il trionfo ai VES Awards e l’esclusione di Black Panther dalla cinquina degli Oscar per la categoria migliori effetti speciali, si concretizzano le speranze di Avengers: Infinity War di conquistare l’ambita statuetta.
